The day the lights went out in Cambodia...

Tuesday, whatever day that is! One day ahead of my readers, You could actually have a birthday twice...  Off to Svay Pak for more classes today we have about 12 more girls to get through today from the bracelet room, before moving on to the restoration home in Phnom Penh. Got there set up first group of girls came in. There was a drip, drip, drip and the floor was filling up with water. soon it was spraying everywhere from the ceiling. Not sure what kind of leak there was but it was wet everywhere. Someone from maintenance came and fixed it. Our first group of girls had never sewn before. We figured this out after their first seam... So we cut some practice fabric and had them sew some straight lines. We did the sewing for a few girls. There are some extenuating circumstances why they can't be around the machines or have a chance to poke themselves. We wanted them to have bags so I sewed and they snipped threads and ironed. The AIM photographer was here today so maybe we will have some pictures. The second group didn't sew either! I really wish I would have know this and it would have been fun to have a craft they could have done. I'll plan that for next time (listen to me!) So if anyone has any ideas and wants to make kits let me know! We made it through that class with out anyone sewing themselves. The look and appreciation that they got to do something just for them is so precious. They are just the cutest girls, most don't speak English, but we seemed to have gotten along just fine. One girl came down the stairs twice just to hug me, and then tried to take me with her, I guess I wasn't going home! The third group showed up (they couldn't sew either), we got the half fabric glued on and "snap" the power went out. It was still out 30 minutes later so Kat and I packed it up and returned home on her Moto. She says it goes out quite a bit during hot season, which this isn't, it's only 90* this week! But if you saw the power line situation you would know why it went out!
Kat begins language school today. So she dropped me off at home and she went to class. Just wasn't sure I wanted to spend 3 hours in a Khmer language class... So I'm finishing catching up on the blog stuff and ready for a nap. I am feeling better as long as I keep my self drugged. The heat is horrible, I am soaked all the time from the humidity. My hair is not curling it is just frizzing! Power is pretty expensive here so they don't AC the entire house only the bedrooms people are in unless they have a group of people in. So I have been sent to my room, thank goodness. Catching up on laundry too. We will go back tomorrow to finish up the last three groups. I think I am teaching the pillow cases to the new girls at the restoration home on Thursday, then we fly off to Siem Reap for more classes, and a few days at a resort. Here are some random observations to leave you with:

There is no hot water except in the shower. You wash everything in the kitchen and bathrooms in cold water. There is a little individual water heater on the wall in the shower.

You just have to get over the whole germ and hygiene thing.

You can only eat the ice with the holes in it. It's filtered.

There are no seat belts, car seats, or booster seats required. Yesterday we saw a family of 4 on the Moto with the mom holding the baby crammed between her and the driver and a toddler on the back. No helmets on anybody. Although it is required to wear a helmet on a Moto. But most traffic laws seem optional.

Most places don't have toilet paper just a bum gun.

A lot of restaurants use cloth in the bathroom at the sink and then they rewash them. Love the fabric coasters everywhere.

No dryers, everything air dries.

Cambodia is 95% Buddhist.

There are no yellow lights.

It's hot and humid here.

There is no Diet Coke.

You can take the girl out of Idaho....
Ketchup anyone?
